The mended-heart-of-the-week of this instalment of Kobato was mildly interesting. Schoolgirl Mutsumi constantly argues with this one boy, so we know immediately that she likes him. When Kobato manages to get them to share an umbrella she goes back from being heartbroken to happy. (If only all school crushes ended this easily) Whereupon she immediately starts arguing with him again. Otherwise the whole story is more of Kobato’s annoying simplicity and the dog’s nastiness, and I’m finding this harder and harder to endure. Well, some new characters arrive next week. Maybe that will spice things up.
Meanwhile Seitokai no Ichizon plays up to its usual strengths of quick dialogue and endless references to other things. In the story each student council member is interviewed by Lilicia, a girl on the student paper staff who holds a grudge. Sugisaki again shines. He’s one of those who believe there is no such thing as bad publicity, in fact he seems to delight in it. This completely undoes Lilicia, especially when Sugisaki freely admits to two-timing, which even gets the other girls to take notice. Then there’s a odd shift of emphasis to Lilicia’s jealousy of the student council, which drives the story off the road a little. Still, we get the fast dialogue and odd references that I like, even if, in this ep, I didn’t get most of them.
